The Howard University Department of Physics and Astronomy aims to achieve national and global distinction in physics research and education while empowering African American students and other underrepresented groups to reach their highest potential in physics. The Department began awarding Master of Science degrees in the 1930s and introduced its PhD program in the 1960s. Its graduate program objectives are to: 1. Become the nation's leading producer of African American physics PhDs, and 2. Excel as a top-tier program in specific physics specialties. Biological physics research focuses on neural networks and biomedical applications. Physics Education faculty have pioneered innovative Earth and Space Science curricula while evaluating their effectiveness. Researchers are also creating theoretical frameworks to understand science culture within underrepresented communities.
