The Howard University Department of Physics and Astronomy aims to achieve national and global distinction in physics research and education while providing African American and underrepresented students opportunities to excel in physics. The department began awarding Master of Science degrees in the 1930s and introduced PhD programs in the 1960s. Its graduate program objectives are: 1.
