Biology students can specialize in one of three focus areas: molecular/cellular biology, anatomy/physiology, or evolutionary/ecological biology. Before choosing a concentration, all majors must complete foundational biology coursework, including General Biology (two-semester sequence 101-102) and Genetics (200), with General Biology serving as a prerequisite for Genetics. Following these core requirements, students must select two elective courses from different concentration areas and complete at least 14 credit hours of advanced electives. All seniors must enroll in Senior Seminar (493 or 494). A minimum of 35 biology credit hours is required for the major.
The program also mandates supporting coursework in chemistry, mathematics, and physics, including: precalculus-level math, a full year of physics, general chemistry with lab, plus Organic Chemistry I, II, and lab.
Graduates will be prepared for diverse career paths in graduate programs or professional schools. Potential career trajectories include academic research, industry positions, government work, or healthcare fields like medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science.
