In 1970, Howard University launched an extensive undergraduate Jazz Studies program, marking it as the first historically Black university to provide a Bachelor of Music degree in this field. By 1983, the National Association of Schools of Music accredited the Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies. The program aims to sustain and promote jazz through teaching, performances, and scholarly work. Coursework encompasses improvisation, composition, arranging, historical studies, digital music, and music industry topics. Jazz Studies students can opt for a Technology Electives specialization, covering MIDI sequencing, notation software, audio production, and live sound engineering. Admission to the Technology Electives track requires prior acceptance into the Jazz Studies program via audition. Every Jazz Studies major must minor in an instrument, piano, or voice. Students must complete a Qualifying Recital by their fourth semester and a Senior Recital to graduate.
