The Howard University Department of Political Science reflects the world's diversity. Our faculty and students represent nearly every corner of the United States and globe. This rich mix of national and cultural backgrounds fosters varied research focuses and political perspectives that uniquely enhance our academic environment. The department's roots trace back to Ralph Bunche, its co-founder and the first African American to earn a Political Science PhD and Nobel Peace Prize. Bunche and his contemporaries challenged the field's institutional biases, highlighting its failure to address Black scholars' intellectual concerns and the Black community's socioeconomic realities. Maintaining this legacy, our department continues to produce a significant number of African American and minority graduates who pursue advanced degrees in law and other fields while serving their communities.
