The 31-semester hour Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist program with Secondary Education Extensions prepares future educators to teach adolescents with disabilities in diverse secondary school environments. This program equips candidates to work in specialized special education classrooms (covering subjects like math, science, social studies, English, or foreign languages), resource rooms, or inclusive settings as consultant teachers or co-teachers. Graduates will gain the necessary skills to educate all learners across various settings while possessing the subject-matter knowledge to help students achieve New York's academic standards. Note: The content extension does not authorize graduates to serve as primary instructors in general education 7-12 subject classrooms.
After completing the program, candidates qualify for New York's initial certification as Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalists with content extensions. The curriculum aims to cultivate ethical educators focused on social justice who embrace reflective, cooperative teaching methods. Key program components include literacy instruction, culturally responsive teaching, universal design for learning, technology integration, and research-backed strategies specifically tailored for adolescent special education. Alongside special education coursework, students must complete 18 additional semester hours in a chosen content area (social studies, mathematics, English, science, or foreign language) for their extension. The clinically-rich program incorporates extensive field experiences, including 100 hours of fieldwork and student teaching placements at both middle and high school levels.
