The Master of Science in Education with a focus on social studies education is a 37-semester-hour program. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent (minimum 30 semester hours) in history or a social science discipline (such as economics, geography, political science, sociology, or anthropology). This curriculum prepares students for New York State initial teaching certification in social studies for grades 7 through 12. The program combines classroom instruction with practical school-based experiences, concluding with a full-time student teaching placement. Key components including literacy, multicultural education, and technology integration are woven throughout the curriculum. The program aligns with both New York State Social Studies Learning Standards and the teacher preparation guidelines established by the National Council for the Social Studies.
