The program features foundational courses in early childhood special education, culminating in a student teaching component, alongside complementary classes in early childhood curriculum and instruction. Hofstra's Early Childhood Special Education curriculum equips students with essential competencies, principles, and practical abilities to serve as early intervention specialists for infants to three-year-olds and their families, while also preparing them to educate preschool through second-grade children with special needs. These specialized programs require a background in general early childhood or elementary education as a prerequisite. Adopting a field-integrated methodology, the program mandates at least 100 hours of fieldwork before student teaching. These practical experiences connect to each professional core course and involve observational participation and field-based assignments across diverse early childhood environments (birth to second grade), particularly in high-needs school districts. Participants engage in parent-professional conferences and provide individualized support to students with disabilities.
