The Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations is committed to delivering an excellent liberal arts education. The Master of Arts in Journalism is a career-focused program designed to train students as principled, proficient creators of news stories, features, investigative pieces, and modern journalistic content.

This MA program builds upon a rigorous core curriculum that develops essential reporting and multimedia abilities, analytical skills, and clear verbal and written communication, equipping graduates for roles as honest, precise media practitioners such as journalists, producers, editors, and broadcasters. Following foundational courses in journalism ethics, reporting, writing, and multimedia techniques, students can specialize in areas like sports and entertainment journalism or community and investigative reporting.

Elective options include graduate-level courses from the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, other departments in the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and/or the Master of Health Administration program. During their final year, students may undertake an internship with a media organization.

Under faculty guidance, students will develop a substantial journalism project in their last semester as a culminating requirement. This project should be either an in-depth article or a multi-part series investigating a topic comprehensively. All submissions must be published digitally (as a blog or website) and incorporate at least three multimedia elements like photographs, video clips, audio recordings, infographics, or data visualizations. Multimedia plans must be outlined in the initial proposal, and all projects require an oral presentation and defense before a faculty committee.

The Journalism MA program focuses on applying journalistic expertise to serve societal objectives. Its curriculum is rooted in liberal arts traditions and the ethical standards that guide media professionals in democratic societies.
