The combined Bachelor's and Master's program in Health and Physical Education is a 155-credit curriculum resulting in dual degrees and New York State teaching certification for grades PK-12 in both subjects. Many school districts prioritize this dual certification when hiring health or physical education instructors. Hofstra's program offers extensive practical training opportunities. This accelerated degree pathway equips future educators with the scholarly expertise, technical proficiency, and reflective practice needed to serve diverse student populations across all grade levels, including those with varying abilities, cultural backgrounds, and special needs. The curriculum emphasizes developing competencies that allow teacher candidates to create and deliver dynamic health and physical education programs aligned with New York State Learning Standards. Graduates who fulfill all requirements for both the B.S. in Physical Education & Health and M.S. in Health & Physical Education will be eligible for the University's endorsement for Initial Certification in both disciplines.
This five-year curriculum comprises 125 undergraduate and 30 graduate credits, covering subject-specific content along with pedagogical training for designing culturally responsive, age-appropriate health and physical education lesson plans. Students build comprehensive knowledge in human biology, exercise science, health principles, and life skills while completing a robust liberal arts foundation. The program integrates multiple field placements where Hofstra students collaborate with practicing teachers in school settings. These embedded clinical experiences allow participants to develop practical teaching skills while building a professional portfolio of school-based work. Upon graduation, students emerge with substantial hands-on experience that enhances their employment prospects.
