Hofstra University offers two primary focus areas within Greek and Roman Studies:
The Greek and Roman Languages and Literatures concentration prioritizes developing proficiency in ancient Greek and/or Latin. This path equips students with comprehensive knowledge of classical texts while exploring interconnected disciplines like ancient history, philosophy, art history, and the religious practices of Greco-Roman societies and early Christianity.
The Greek and Roman Civilizations concentration centers on classical literature (studied in translation), while also incorporating elements of ancient languages and other relevant fields such as historical studies, philosophical traditions, artistic developments, and religious systems from ancient Greece, Rome, and early Christian contexts.
Students pursuing Greek and Roman Studies who aim to enter legal or medical professions should consider courses examining the ancient roots of these fields. HIST 123 and RHET 005 are particularly valuable for future legal scholars, while CLL 046 benefits those pursuing medical careers.
