Since 1986, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine has provided a specialized program in geriatric dentistry. This program includes a two-year geriatric dentistry certificate, a Master of Medical Sciences degree (MMSc, which takes three years or two years for candidates with an existing MPH or similar qualification), and a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree (DMSc, a four-year program). The HSDM Advanced Graduate Education Program in Geriatric Dentistry (Certificate) is a two-year interdisciplinary initiative combining dentistry, medicine, and mental/behavioral health to educate dental fellows in caring for older adults, particularly underserved communities. Structured around four key elements—academic coursework, clinical practice, teaching/administrative experience, and research—the program equips graduates to become geriatric dentistry specialists. These professionals gain the expertise to serve patients across institutional, community, and private practice environments while advancing the field through academic and professional contributions.
