Harvard's physics graduate program provides students with dynamic learning experiences across various disciplines and departments. Within the Physics Department, dedicated graduate scholars collaborate with distinguished professors and skilled postdoctoral researchers in cutting-edge facilities. Key research domains encompass experimental and theoretical physics, spanning atomic/molecular physics, quantum optics, condensed matter, computational physics, solid/fluid physics, biophysics, astrophysics, statistical mechanics, mathematical physics, particle physics, quantum field theory, string theory, and relativity. The department prioritizes creating an inclusive atmosphere to attract diverse talents, currently housing 50+ faculty members (including emeritus), 100+ postdoctoral researchers, and 200+ graduate students. Physics department facilities feature Jefferson Laboratory - the nation's oldest physics lab - and Lyman Laboratory, with Jefferson containing a specially designed wing to enhance graduate student collaboration and study.
Prospective students should be well-versed in undergraduate-level physics and mathematics. Typically, applicants will have devoted approximately half of their undergraduate work to physics and related subjects, such as mathematics and chemistry. It is desirable for every applicant to have completed at least one year of introductory quantum mechanics classes.
A prospective student who has a marked interest in a particular branch of physics should include this information in the online application. If possible, applicants should also indicate whether they are inclined toward experimental or theoretical (mathematical) research. This statement of preference will not be treated as a binding commitment to any course of study and research.
Applicants must receive a minimum score of 80 for the TOEFL, and it is not common for applicants to be admitted with TOEFL scores below 90. The minimum IELTS Academic score is 6.5. Some programs may require higher scores. Application Deadline: Dec 15.
