The Business Economics PhD is a collaborative program between Harvard's Department of Economics and Harvard Business School (HBS), administered through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). This interdisciplinary degree combines rigorous economics training with specialized business research, offering concentrations in areas like corporate finance, market structures, international commerce, business strategy, governance systems, and public-private sector relations. Students complete identical first-year coursework to economics PhD candidates, followed by specialized second-year classes leading to comprehensive exams jointly supervised by Economics and Business Economics faculty. Dissertation research requires collaboration with advisors from both departments. Graduates pursue academic careers across diverse fields including economic theory, financial studies, policy analysis, and business education in top-tier institutions.
Applicants with bachelors degrees in the social sciences, engineering, sciences, as well as business are especially encouraged to apply.
Adequate command of spoken and written English is required for admission. Non-native English speakers must take the TOEFL or IELTS, unless they have obtained the equivalent of a US bachelor degree from an institution at which English is the language of instruction. The committee prefers scores of at least 100 on the Internet-based test (IBT) of the TOEFL or scores of at least 7.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
