The Astronomy Department provides a comprehensive graduate program encompassing theoretical, observational, and experimental studies culminating in a PhD degree. Research activities take place at the Harvard College Observatory, which shares its campus and resources with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. These combined institutions form the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), offering an expansive research environment covering nearly all astrophysics disciplines - from atomic physics to cosmology, utilizing techniques ranging from gamma-ray detection to radio astronomy. With more than 360 doctoral scientists working at CfA, students enjoy exceptional breadth in selecting dissertation topics and benefit from numerous learning opportunities through both structured courses and informal seminars. Harvard's graduate students thrive in this intellectually vibrant community, utilizing world-class facilities while working in an encouraging academic atmosphere. The graduate curriculum aims to cultivate exceptional researchers with comprehensive astrophysics knowledge and teaching skills. Through tailored advising and structured requirements, we guide students in deepening their astrophysical expertise and completing impactful dissertations efficiently.
The Department of Astronomy does not require the GRE General test. The Physics Subject GRE is optional. In the additional academic materials section of the online application, prospective students must also upload a list of their four most advanced courses in astronomy and their two most advanced courses in mathematics, indicating textbooks (and authors) used in each course.
The department expects candidates for advanced degrees to develop professional competence in a chosen area of research and to acquire sufficient general knowledge to understand and follow important developments in other areas of astronomy and astrophysics. Candidates are admitted directly to the PhD program, although the AM degree will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the residence requirements. The duration of graduate study should not ordinarily exceed five years, and students in their sixth year are encouraged to finish promptly.
Applicants must receive a minimum score of 80 for the TOEFL, and it is not common for applicants to be admitted with TOEFL scores below 90. The minimum IELTS Academic score is 6.5. Some programs may require higher scores. Application deadline: December 15.
