The United States requires visionary leaders in preK-12 education—individuals who combine a deep commitment to educational excellence and fairness with expertise in learning theory, public policy, and organizational management to turn innovative ideas into tangible results. The three-year Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) Program, taught by faculty from Harvard's Graduate School of Education, Business School, and Kennedy School, equips graduates for high-impact roles in school districts, national nonprofits, philanthropic organizations, mission-driven businesses, and government education agencies. This full-time, cohort-based program brings together 25 professionals from varied backgrounds—including school administrators, educators, policy analysts, and social entrepreneurs—who collaborate throughout their studies. The Ed.L.D. curriculum emphasizes that systemic change in preK-12 education demands collective action across sectors, uniting leaders from government, schools, nonprofits, and education-focused enterprises. Participants benefit from full tuition coverage, stipends, employment opportunities, and a funded third-year residency with a partner institution.
For applicants to the Ed.L.D. degree, while a bachelor's degree is not required, those who hold a B.A., B.S., or equivalent degree are the most competitive for admission. English Language Scores: HGSE prefers applicants with scores of 104 or higher on the Internet-based TOEFL, with individual section scores (e.g., reading, writing, listening, and speaking) of at least 26. On the Paper-based TOEFL, HGSE prefers applicants with individual section scores of at least 26 each in reading, writing, and listening. HGSE prefers applicants with scores of 7.5 or higher on the IELTS for Academic Purposes exam, with individual section scores (e.g., reading, writing, listening, and speaking) of at least 7.5 as well.
