Students can choose between two specialized tracks in the Automotive Technology program: the Chassis and Drivetrain option or the Engine Performance and Emissions option. Those new to either track are advised to take preparatory classes in automotive theory and computer skills before starting the certificate's core requirements. This step helps ensure success in mandatory courses, unless students have equivalent prior training or education that meets the preparation standards. These courses are typically structured sequentially, enabling certificate completion within two years.
Students must supply their own textbooks, personal safety gear, protective clothing, a basic hand tool set, and project materials. Costs for these items will differ based on where they are bought.
After finishing the program, students will be able to:
Measure and convert given units to understand SAE and metric equivalents (e.g., Celsius to Fahrenheit and inches to millimeters).
Detect a malfunction (such as no air conditioning) and carry out a repair, then assess the success of the fix in a lab setting.
Examine and troubleshoot automotive engines and associated parts for proper system functionality.
Show proficiency with diagnostic tools and equipment utilized in automotive repair.
All applicants must have earned the equivalent of a high school diploma or be at least 18 years old by the start of their first term.
