Biochemistry research focuses on analyzing and interpreting chemical processes as they relate to the makeup and functioning of living organisms, including their molecular interactions. Our faculty conduct studies spanning molecular biology, enzyme functions, metabolic processes, and biomolecular architecture, with specialized investigations in: the mechanisms of redox enzymes, particularly flavin-dependent types; how disease-causing bacteria absorb heme; biomolecular characteristics through interdisciplinary methods bridging inorganic, organic chemistry and molecular biology; medically significant metal-containing proteins and protein radicals examined via biochemical, genetic, and spectroscopic techniques; and the multifaceted roles of calcium and calcium-binding proteins in biological, material, and environmental systems.
