The Master of Arts program in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Georgia State University features three interconnected focus areas:
Globalization
Sexuality studies
Social transformation
Our program distinguishes itself through its focus on how gender and sexuality intersect with race, national identities, ethnicity, and cross-border perspectives. We place particular importance on queer theory, LGBTQ studies, and the intersection of activism with academic theory.
A unique aspect of our program is the flexibility in thesis options, allowing students to choose from three distinct formats:
Research Thesis: Original scholarly work that advances knowledge in gender and sexuality studies
Creative Thesis: Artistic production such as theatrical works, visual art exhibitions, or multimedia projects
Action Research Thesis: Practical engagement through internships with social justice organizations or community-based activism
Our interdisciplinary MA program provides fresh perspectives on the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, class, and nationality. The Institute for Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies delivers a forward-thinking curriculum centered on four key domains: Black Feminist Theory, International WGSS, Sexuality and Queer/Trans Studies, and Applied WGSS for Social Transformation. Our faculty's expertise encompasses global perspectives, including the African diaspora, Latin American contexts, Southeast Asian studies, and North American issues, with particular attention to globalization's impact, cultural expressions of sexuality, and both local and transnational feminist movements. Graduates are well-prepared for doctoral studies in WGSS or related fields, as well as careers in non-profits, social services, politics, or business. Many alumni also establish themselves in creative professions as artists, musicians, writers, journalists, or media producers.
