The Georgia State University M.A.T. in Social Studies Education prepares bachelor's degree holders for initial certification in Secondary Social Studies (grades 6-12). This program awards both a Master of Arts in Teaching degree and a renewable Georgia T5 Induction Certificate.

Social studies instructors cultivate critical thinking skills and content knowledge across history, geography, political science, and economics. Urban schools particularly require socially conscious, highly competent educators who embrace student diversity and champion equitable practices. These teachers foster democratic participation by creating classroom environments that nurture informed global citizenship.

Rooted in educational theory and research, our secondary Social Studies program emphasizes social justice while incorporating cutting-edge teaching methods. Candidates complete specialized coursework paired with hands-on classroom experience in middle and high schools. The innovative curriculum includes technology integration and international study options, with faculty guiding students through lesson planning, instructional strategies, evaluation techniques, and reflective practice alongside dedicated educational partners.
