This program offers specialized instruction in written translation for individuals seeking expertise in particular language pairs. Participant advancement will be carefully tracked, with an assessment of each student's likelihood to successfully finish the program conducted after every course.

The curriculum features a comparative stylistics course, a general translation class, two specialized translation modules, and a culminating translation workshop. To earn certification, participants must achieve a minimum grade of B in all courses and score at least a B on the final assessment.

For aspiring interpreters, the program delivers professional training in both medical and legal interpretation. Currently, these offerings are exclusively available in Spanish. Enrollment in the interpretation track requires either completion of the translation curriculum or proof of equivalent written translation skills, along with oral fluency in both source and target languages.

The interpretation curriculum includes courses covering medical and state court legal interpretation. Students will take introductory interpretation classes, sessions on consecutive, simultaneous, and sight interpretation, plus specialized medical and legal interpretation courses. Regular evaluations will monitor each participant's development and program completion prospects. Certification requires maintaining a B average across all courses and achieving at least a B on the final examination.

Qualification Requirements

Qualification for entrance into either program is based on achievements on an appropriate proficiency examination. Candidates for the program in translation must pass a written examination in English and in the language of specialization. Candidates for the program in interpretation must pass written and oral examinations in both the source and target languages. Candidates who are not considered admissible because of insufficient knowledge of the proposed working language or deficiencies in their general backgrounds will be advised to consider preparatory courses in the Department of World Languages and Cultures or in another department. The entrance examination is offered at regular intervals each year for entrance in the fall semester. However, the course sequence in Translation or Interpretation cannot be initiated unless there is a sufficient enrollment. Thus, there is no guarantee that the Translation and Interpretation programs in French, German, and Spanish can be offered routinely every year. In some cases there will be a delay in initiating a sequence until a critical mass of qualified students is available. Non-native speakers of English are required to demonstrate English proficiency. This requirement can be met in the following ways:
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL including the special home edition)
International Language Testing System (IELTS)
Documentation that the baccalaureate or a prior graduate degree was obtained in an English-speaking country
Completion of a University System of Georgia approved ESL program (case-by-case basis)
IELTS 6.0
TOEFL 60
TOEFL PBT 160
