The Department of World Languages and Cultures has three primary missions: fostering appreciation for humanistic values via foreign language, literature, and cultural studies; teaching languages as practical communication tools; and equipping students for academic pursuits and global business careers. Situated within a vibrant urban university in an increasingly international city, the department actively addresses the growing language demands of government, corporate, and professional sectors. It emphasizes that true language mastery and deep cultural understanding are fundamental for advanced study across its programs.
The department houses CIRCLE (Center for International Resources and Collaborative Language Engagement), a comprehensive academic hub offering drop-in tutoring for all languages taught at Georgia State, along with digital learning tools like software, apps, and multimedia materials. CIRCLE also organizes cultural events, conversation groups, social gatherings, and tech-focused language workshops. This initiative aligns with the university's strategic objectives to internationalize education and boost global skills among students and staff. Beyond language coursework, students are encouraged to supplement their studies with relevant classes in history, philosophy, arts, business, and education. Department faculty are available to guide students in crafting their academic paths.
