The Department of World Languages and Cultures has three primary objectives: fostering appreciation for humanistic values via foreign language, literature, and cultural studies; teaching languages as practical communication tools; and equipping students for academic pursuits and global business careers. Situated within a vibrant urban university in an increasingly international city, the department actively addresses the growing language demands of government, corporate, and professional sectors. It emphasizes that true proficiency in foreign languages and deep cultural understanding form the foundation for advanced study across its programs.
The department houses CIRCLE (Center for International Resources and Collaborative Language Engagement), a comprehensive academic support hub offering walk-in tutoring for all languages taught at Georgia State, along with digital learning tools like software, apps, and multimedia materials. CIRCLE also organizes cultural events, conversation groups, social gatherings, and technology workshops to promote global awareness. This initiative aligns with the university's strategic priorities of internationalizing education and developing global competencies among students and faculty. Students pursuing the Pre-education in English concentration should balance British and American literature courses to best prepare for teaching careers.
