The Department of World Languages and Cultures has three key missions: fostering appreciation for humanistic values via foreign language, literature, and cultural studies; teaching languages as practical communication tools; and equipping students for academic pursuits and global business careers. Situated within a vibrant urban university in an increasingly international city, the department actively addresses the growing language demands of government, corporate, and professional sectors. It emphasizes that true proficiency in foreign languages and deep cultural understanding are fundamental for advanced studies across its programs.
The department houses CIRCLE (Center for International Resources and Collaborative Language Engagement), a versatile academic hub offering drop-in tutoring for all languages taught at Georgia State, along with digital learning tools like software, apps, and multimedia materials. CIRCLE also organizes cultural events and language-focused activities, including conversation groups, discussion forums, social gatherings, and tech workshops. This center supports the university's strategic objectives to internationalize education and strengthen global skills—including world language proficiency—among students, faculty, and staff.
