English majors can specialize in one of four tracks: literature, rhetoric and composition, creative writing, or pre-education. Before selecting their focus area, all English majors build a comprehensive foundation during their sophomore year, studying British literature, American literature, and global languages and cultures. With guidance from academic advisors, students then select advanced courses to explore their interests more deeply. The program culminates with specialized seminars within their chosen concentration.
The department also provides a unique joint studies program with the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, England, enabling Georgia State University English and history majors to graduate with a specialization in British and American Cultures.
Through these concentrations, English majors cultivate an awareness of language and a respect for creativity. Upon graduation, they will have honed their abilities in structuring ideas, effective writing, and critical analysis. The English curriculum provides varied avenues for students to develop personal perspectives and express them clearly.
