Cognitive Aging examines how mental processes evolve throughout adulthood through scientific research. While focusing primarily on typical, healthy cognitive changes with age, the program also explores cognitive impairments linked to age-related diseases. This field specifically studies variations and transformations in fundamental cognitive functions (like working memory, episodic memory, attention, processing speed, and language), complex thinking skills (including adult intellectual growth), and real-world applications of cognition (such as learning, skill building, daily problem-solving, and self-awareness). Georgia Tech boasts an exceptional program in this discipline, featuring dedicated faculty specializing in adult cognitive development and aging, plus additional researchers actively investigating connected subjects like aging and human interaction with technology.
