Medical physics is an emerging field that applies physical principles, primarily those related to ionizing radiation, to healthcare—especially for diagnosing and treating human illnesses. At Georgia Tech, current research focuses on five key areas: innovative radiation therapy methods, advanced diagnostic imaging approaches, computational dose calculation techniques, enhanced radiotherapy planning strategies, and radiation safety measurements at medical accelerator sites.
Studies on novel radiation therapy methods include pioneering work with 252Cf neutron brachytherapy, neutron capture treatment, gold nanoparticle-based targeted therapies, and biophysical modeling of cellular responses to radiation exposure.
