The Linguistics Department at Georgetown University focuses on exploring various linguistic aspects through multiple research approaches. We investigate language by studying its structure, how it's learned, its usage in different contexts, and through computer-based modeling. Recognizing that each analytical perspective offers valuable insights and that no single approach can answer all linguistic questions, we foster an environment of academic diversity. Our Master of Science program enables students to specialize in specific areas, enhancing their knowledge and developing fresh perspectives. Graduate students choose from four specialization tracks: Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, or Theoretical Linguistics
Computational Linguistics involves using computational methods to scientifically analyze language. This dynamic field produces both theoretical breakthroughs about human language capabilities and practical applications that benefit society. Our computational linguistics faculty and students actively engage with the broader GUCL academic community across campus.
