Our Literature and Cultural Studies program takes an interdisciplinary approach, blending close reading of primary texts with critical theory while incorporating audiovisual, historical, and philosophical viewpoints to maximize students' research potential. Faculty expertise spans traditional areas like Medieval, Early Modern, Modern Spain, Colonial Latin America, Modern Latin America, and Luso-Brazilian Studies, alongside emerging fields such as Transatlantic/Transpacific Studies and Film/Media Studies.
Both graduate programs focus on cultivating analytical, scholarly, and creative skills through intimate seminar settings, with formal teaching training as a core element. We actively support domestic and international graduate students in presenting at academic conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals, frequently through faculty collaborations. Our graduates have achieved notable success securing tenure-track positions at prestigious institutions across the U.S. and internationally.
In partnership with The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, we provide comprehensive support for new doctoral candidates in Linguistics and Literature and Cultural Studies. All incoming doctoral students receive five years of financial support including a stipend, health coverage, and full tuition remission.
