Georgetown's Ph.D. program provides exceptional opportunities for aspiring historians. Students receive guidance from our renowned, award-winning History faculty while taking advantage of the university's diverse regional studies programs and interdisciplinary research centers. Washington, D.C. offers unmatched resources including the Library of Congress, National Archives, and other premier institutions housing vast research collections. Language learning opportunities are plentiful throughout the program.
Our Colonial North American and U.S. History specialization features comprehensive graduate coursework across numerous disciplines. Faculty expertise spans diplomatic history, political history, social movements, labor studies, slavery research, Civil War scholarship, immigration patterns, gender studies, and Atlantic world history. The program boasts particular strength in 20th-century U.S. foreign policy and domestic affairs (with four experts), 19th-century American studies (five specialists), and Atlantic world history (three faculty members).
