The Biology major offers a thorough exploration of the living world, covering topics from ecology and evolutionary biology to molecular, cellular, and developmental studies. This program gives students maximum flexibility to select courses aligned with their interests across biological disciplines. Additionally, it allows for specialization in either Ecology, Evolution, and Behavioral Biology (EEB) or Biochemistry, Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (BMCDB).
The curriculum includes foundational studies in biology, mathematics, general chemistry, and other sciences. Following introductory coursework, students progress to intermediate-level classes. By their third year, they must complete at least one course from each of two distribution categories (Molecules and Populations). In their sophomore spring semester, students take the communication-intensive Gateway course (BIOL-1910), which fulfills the University's Integrated Writing requirement. Advanced students then select electives from departmental offerings to finish their major requirements.
Specializing in either EEB or BMCDB requires completing 15 credits within the chosen focus area. The Department's website provides a list of applicable courses for each concentration. Students should develop their specialization plan in close collaboration with a faculty advisor and formally declare it to the Dean's office. The chosen concentration will be noted on the student's academic transcript.
