The Master of Public Policy (MPP) program at the Trachtenberg School equips students to thoroughly analyze data while examining the foundational theories that influence public policy across governments and global systems.
Beyond required courses, MPP and MPA candidates select a specialized study area aligned with their professional goals, either from predefined options or through advisor-guided customization. Every TSPPPA graduate student undertakes a capstone project with a client they select.
This concentration readies students for roles in international development management and policy analysis. Course offerings are organized into three categories. Initial courses concentrate on management principles, offering practical knowledge about the international development sector—including key stakeholders, policy formulation processes, and specialized management techniques. The second category emphasizes analytical and theoretical examinations of development challenges, covering critical policy domains like education, health, and environmental resources, along with cross-cutting themes such as trade impacts and migration patterns. Students are also encouraged to consider relevant courses—like those in the third category—from the Elliott School of International Affairs and other disciplines including anthropology, global health, and emergency management. With advisor approval, students may combine any nine credits from these options. Starting with PPPA 6057 (management focus) or ECON 6250 (policy focus) is advised. Important: Launching an international development career generally demands both a master's degree and overseas work experience. Those without such experience should consult with advisors or career services early in their studies.
