Economics examines decision-making in conditions of limited resources and how these decisions influence production, pricing, national income, joblessness, price increases, economic expansion, and resource allocation both domestically and internationally. GW's advanced economics curriculum covers subjects spanning from microeconomics, macroeconomics, and statistical economics to specialized fields like employment economics, global economics, and industrial economics. This program falls under the social and behavioral sciences department within the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.
The doctoral program consists of two phases. The initial phase requires passing tests in microeconomic and macroeconomic principles along with two specialized area exams chosen by the candidate and authorized by the doctoral advisory board. The subsequent phase involves joining a thesis workshop, finishing the written dissertation, and presenting an oral defense. Designed mainly for full-time enrollment, the program typically takes five to six years to complete. In exceptional cases, the department may accept exceptionally qualified candidates for part-time study.
