George Mason's PhD program in Writing and Rhetoric provides a comprehensive curriculum focused on theoretical, applied, and creative approaches to writing in professional and public contexts. Our program operates on the principle that effective writing and instruction in modern organizations demands thorough, interdisciplinary study of rhetoric, digital technologies, cultural influences, and research methods. The curriculum equips students for careers involving rhetoric and education across diverse settings including:
higher education institutions
K-12 school systems
government agencies and nonprofit organizations
business environments
digital and mass media platforms
Alumni will address the growing need for rhetoric and composition faculty who can teach and direct programs in writing administration, interdisciplinary writing initiatives, technical communication, and media analysis. Both public and private sectors increasingly require experts to perform research, oversee projects, and evaluate policies related to emerging communication technologies. Our graduates will develop advanced skills in writing, research, and teaching, gaining critical knowledge of both conceptual frameworks and practical strategies to improve their professional contributions across educational, corporate, governmental, and nonprofit sectors.
