The economics doctoral program immerses students in specialized areas like Austrian economics, experimental economics, and public choice theory. Guided by the legacies of two Nobel Prize winners - the late James Buchanan, a Mason professor, and Vernon Smith, Mason professor emeritus - the curriculum offers students a comprehensive understanding across multiple disciplines.
Throughout the PhD journey, you'll collaborate with distinguished faculty on groundbreaking research while developing skills to effectively convey complex concepts to diverse audiences. Situated in the Washington D.C. metro area, Mason doctoral candidates gain access to unparalleled professional opportunities. Our alumni emerge as impactful leaders across private enterprises, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.
The initial year concentrates on foundational theories and their practical applications. During the second year, students achieve expertise in two selected concentration areas. The program offers diverse specialization options such as Austrian economics, constitutional economics, economic history, experimental economics, industrial organization, institutional development, law and economics, monetary theory, public choice, and Smithian political economy.
Prospective PhD candidates should apply directly to the doctoral program. The degree path allows students to obtain a master's in economics concurrently with their doctoral studies.
