The Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) program aims to teach students through excellent education and hands-on learning in lifespan development and family studies, promoting analytical skills along with research, communication, and career preparation abilities that equip them for professional roles serving individuals and families. Graduates of Human Development & Family Science (HDFS) learn to apply family-focused and strengths-based methods to enhance the health and wellness of people and families in varied communities. Students in HDFS gain skills to work with families at all life stages and across multiple service environments and careers, ranging from early childhood education to family law and policy initiatives.
Our program in family research, policy, and advocacy also equips students to evaluate intricate family challenges, champion family needs in educational, community, and policy settings, and tackle social determinants affecting family stability, health, and welfare (such as economic hardship, migration, homelessness, and domestic violence). A mandatory 6-credit internship combines academic research with practical fieldwork, serving as a vital part of HDFS student growth and enhancing readiness for various careers in human development and family sciences.
