The Physics Department provides a doctoral program culminating in a PhD, with opportunities to obtain a Master of Science (MS) degree either during the program or through the APS Bridge Program. The department prioritizes graduate education, sustaining it through robust, well-resourced, and varied research initiatives.
A core objective of the graduate program is to equip students for research careers and related professions. Graduates are expected to possess the skills and knowledge to advance fundamental understanding in physics or their specialized area. Additionally, they are anticipated to stand alongside future innovators in industry, government, and academia.
The faculty maintains that impactful research strengthens teaching at every level. Students at all stages—undergraduates, graduates, and postdoctoral researchers—engage in physics research at Florida State University. Notably, most undergraduate physics students contribute to research projects, with many earning co-authorship on published work. Research spans computational physics, as well as experimental and theoretical work in high-energy, nuclear, condensed matter, astrophysics, and atomic/molecular physics. Interdisciplinary opportunities abound, especially through collaborations with the Integrative NanoScience Institute (INSI), the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL), the Department of Scientific Computing, and the Institute of Molecular Biophysics (IMB).
