Florida State University has maintained a graduate oceanography program since 1949. Students can pursue Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees with concentrations in biological, chemical, geochemical, and physical oceanography. The program has gained widespread acclaim both domestically and globally. Faculty regularly lead sessions at major scientific conferences worldwide, with their work published in top-tier academic journals. Several professors have been honored as Fellows by prestigious organizations including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Distinguished achievements include an Emeritus professor receiving the John Simon Guggenheim Award and election to the National Academy of Sciences, while current faculty member Professor Allan Clarke was awarded the Nansen Medal by the European Geosciences Union.
