Florida State University's Master of Fine Arts in Costume Design program offers comprehensive training in both the artistic and practical aspects of costume creation. This program equips students with essential skills to advance their careers in performing arts or entertainment costume design.
Participants specialize in one of two MFA tracks: Costume Design or Costume Technology. Those in the design concentration gain expertise in theatrical costume design, rendering techniques, and the collaborative process of transforming script concepts into stage productions. Technology students master advanced skills like historical pattern drafting, haute couture sewing, tailoring, and specialized costume fabrication.
All MFA candidates must design at least two full productions during their studies and present a professional-quality portfolio for graduation. Separate applications are required for both the program and Florida State University.
First-year Costume Design MFA students typically assist on designs and work on student-directed projects. Second-year students progress to designing subscription season productions while continuing assistant work. The third year culminates in a Creative Final Project, where students design for a major production or other significant project aligned with their professional aspirations. Graduates typically complete the program with multiple fully realized productions in their professional portfolios.
