The Hispanic Literature and Cultural Studies concentration provides MA and PhD programs where students focus on Spanish American and Spanish literary and cultural research. Doctoral candidates have explored diverse fields including Hispanic Caribbean Studies, US Latino culture, Modern Iberian studies, Colonial Spanish America, and Spain's Golden Age. Our Spanish program's MA and PhD output aligns with current academic job market demands, where our graduates have achieved notable success despite intense competition. Doctoral alumni have secured tenure-track positions at prestigious institutions like the University of Central Florida, City University of New York, University of Alabama, University of North Carolina, University of North Georgia, Carthage University, Spring Hill College, College of Mount St Vincent, and Ferrum College.
Florida State University strongly supports this concentration, evidenced by recent faculty appointments in Comparative Caribbean Studies and Colonial Spanish America. Our Hispanic studies scholars examine pressing topics such as cultural identity, race, gender, and ethnicity through multiple theoretical lenses including Post-Colonial Theory, Cultural Studies, Queer Theory, Eco-Criticism, Performance Studies, and Material Culture Studies. The program maintains collaborative relationships with other departmental specialties like Francophone Studies, as well as interdisciplinary connections with Art History, English, and Latin American and Caribbean Studies programs. We encourage applications for both MA and PhD degrees in Spanish with this specialized focus on Hispanic Literature and Cultural Studies.
