The study of Western Antiquity Religions explores Mediterranean and western Asian religious traditions prior to Islam's emergence. While covering diverse topics from Egyptian religious practices to Greco-Roman beliefs through late antiquity, the curriculum primarily focuses on ancient Judaism and early Christianity. This includes in-depth examination of literary, historical, and sociological aspects of texts revered by various Jewish and Christian groups. Beyond gaining essential philological and historical research skills, students must master historical-critical biblical methodologies developed over recent centuries and comprehend scriptural interpretation throughout ancient and medieval eras. Candidates will collaborate with Religion Department faculty including Professors Goff, Kelley, Levenson, and Durdin, while leveraging interdisciplinary connections with Classics and Philosophy. PhD applicants should possess Religious Studies methodological training and are advised to incorporate coursework from other departmental specializations.
