The M.A./Ph.D. concentration in History and Ethnography of Religions (HER) aims to deliver cross-disciplinary education in religious studies, focusing on the historical and anthropological examination of specific faith traditions taught by HER faculty. Program participants engage in focused research on the social and cultural histories, rituals, textual traditions, philosophical systems, and languages of particular religious traditions.
Our Graduate Program offers four specialized tracks: American Religious History (ARH), History and Ethnography of Religions (HER), Religion, Ethics, and Philosophy (REP), and Religions of Western Antiquity (RWA). Each track maintains distinct degree criteria. Candidates accepted into any of these four tracks will receive guidance from faculty within their chosen specialization while also completing coursework and certain requirements outside their primary focus area. The department maintains a policy of exclusively accepting full-time students into the Graduate Program in Religion.
