The College of Law's three-year Juris Doctor program starts with core foundational courses before advancing to contemporary theoretical and interdisciplinary studies. First-year students build essential knowledge in legal history, doctrine, and analytical methods to prepare for specialized upper-level coursework. During their second and third years, students enjoy nearly complete elective freedom, choosing from diverse course offerings ranging from doctrinal studies to industry-specific tracks like healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and sports/entertainment law. The curriculum emphasizes practical training through experiential learning opportunities that prepare graduates for careers in business, government, and legal practice. Beyond our renowned business, environmental, and international law programs, we boast exceptional criminal law studies. Students may pursue ten different joint-degree options through collaborations with other Florida State University departments. Practical training extends through live-client clinics (family law, children's advocacy, business law) and statewide externships. Co-curricular programs allow students to earn academic credit for practical legal work, with Mock Trial and Moot Court developing advocacy skills while student-run journals enhance research and writing abilities.
Supplemental certificates demonstrate specialized expertise to employers. The College of Law offers certification in three focused areas, including our International Law program. This rigorous certificate requires coursework beyond standard J.D. requirements, signaling to employers a graduate's advanced training in global legal practice.
