The College of Law's three-year Juris Doctor program starts with foundational courses before advancing to contemporary theoretical and interdisciplinary studies. First-year students build essential knowledge in legal history, doctrine, and analytical methods to prepare for specialized upper-level coursework. During their second and third years, students enjoy nearly complete elective freedom, choosing from diverse offerings including theoretical classes, industry-specific courses (such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and sports/entertainment law), and practical learning experiences. The program prepares graduates for careers in business, government, and legal practice, with particular strengths in business law, environmental law, and international law - including one of the region's top criminal law programs. Students may pursue ten different joint-degree options through collaborations with other Florida State University departments. Practical training opportunities include family law clinics, children's advocacy programs, business law clinics, and statewide externships. Co-curricular activities allow students to earn academic credit through legal practice, with Mock Trial and Moot Court programs developing litigation skills, while three student-run journals enhance research and writing abilities.
The International Law program features specialized courses reflecting faculty expertise, global and domestic externships, and an international law certificate. Florida State maintains three international exchange programs and operates the longest-running American law school summer program at Oxford University. The university also publishes the student-run Journal of Transnational Law & Policy.
