The Juris Doctor program at the College of Law spans three years, starting with foundational courses before advancing to cutting-edge theoretical and interdisciplinary studies. The first year establishes core knowledge in legal history, doctrine, process, and analytical methods, preparing students for specialized coursework in subsequent years. During the second and third years, students enjoy nearly complete elective freedom, choosing from diverse course offerings that include theoretical studies, industry-specific focuses (like healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and entertainment/sports law), and practical experiential learning opportunities. These programs equip graduates for careers in business, government, and legal practice. Beyond our renowned business, environmental, and international law programs, we boast exceptional criminal law studies. Students may pursue ten different joint-degree options through collaborations with other Florida State University departments. Practical training opportunities include live-client clinics (family law, children's advocacy, business law), statewide externships, and co-curricular activities. Our Mock Trial and Moot Court programs develop advocacy skills, while student-run journals enhance research and writing capabilities.
The College provides an advanced business, finance, and tax curriculum. Beyond fundamental courses like Corporations and Closely Held Business Organizations, students select from numerous specialized offerings. Our business taxation courses are particularly robust, with content continuously updated to reflect evolving financial regulations and corporate practices. Unique opportunities include the Business Law Certificate Program, Business Law Clinic, and Business Externship initiatives. This comprehensive business law education combines legal theory with economic principles and practical application, preparing students as both transactional attorneys and litigators. The program emphasizes often-neglected but crucial skills like financial statement analysis, complex contract drafting, and compliance issue identification - complementing traditional business law instruction with vital real-world competencies.
