Florida State University provides graduate programs including an M.A. in Rhetoric and Composition and a Ph.D. in English with a Rhetoric and Composition specialization. Our curriculum establishes a strong base through core courses covering Rhetoric, Composition, Research Methodologies, and Theories of Difference. Key program features include: Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: We embrace diversity across race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, language, ability, and other identity aspects. This commitment is reflected in our courses, professional development, research, recruitment, and faculty hiring.
Community and Collaborative Work: Faculty and students frequently collaborate on publications, conference presentations, editorial projects, and grant writing. We foster a supportive community through regular gatherings that encourage both personal and professional growth.
Writing Program Administration (WPA): Numerous faculty and students engage with WPA initiatives in composition programs, writing centers, digital studios, and writing majors. Graduate students receive hands-on experience and mentorship in WPA roles, supported by specialized coursework and scholarship opportunities.
Digital Scholarship: Our program explores digital composition and humanities through courses like digital convergence culture, two digital studios, and ongoing archive projects, providing diverse avenues for digital research and teaching.
Career Support: From admission through post-graduation, students benefit from comprehensive mentoring. We offer workshops and short courses covering conference presentations, publishing, academic careers, ePortfolios, and job preparation.
Degree Options: The English Graduate Program includes M.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. degrees. M.A. students choose between Literature, Media, and Culture or Rhetoric and Composition tracks. M.F.A. candidates focus on Creative Writing, while Ph.D. students complete core requirements before specializing in areas ranging from Medieval Studies to Postcolonial Literature and Digital Humanities.
