The Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering is an advanced research-focused program aimed at cultivating scholars, awarded exclusively to candidates who exhibit expertise in a specialized civil engineering field and the ability to perform innovative, autonomous academic research.
Program Structure. The M.S. to Ph.D. pathway requires completion of 51 semester hours, combining advanced coursework with dissertation research. Course enrollment mandates fulfillment of prerequisite requirements. Candidates without prior degrees in civil or environmental engineering must also complete foundational articulation courses. Full-time students are required to participate in Graduate Seminar (CGN 5935) every semester.
Specialization courses deliver in-depth training within a specific civil engineering concentration, enabling students to achieve subject mastery. These may incorporate relevant coursework from allied academic departments.
Supporting electives are designed to broaden students' interdisciplinary competencies, potentially including subjects from other civil engineering specializations, related engineering fields, scientific disciplines, advanced quantitative methods, computational sciences, urban planning, and geographical studies.
