The Sociology Department at FSU boasts over 20 faculty members with diverse specializations spanning Demography, Health and Aging, Family Studies, Gender, Inequality, and Social Change. Our renowned undergraduate and graduate programs enjoy national recognition, particularly across the Southern region. We welcome discussions about enrolling in sociology courses or declaring it as your major.
Our undergraduate curriculum focuses on five key disciplines: Social Organization, Personality and Society, Population and Human Ecology, Social Issues and Change, and Family Studies. Undergraduates have opportunities for Directed Individual Study with faculty mentors, along with an Honors Program for eligible students.
The Sociology major requires thirty credit hours. Core courses demanding a C- or higher include: Sociological Theory (SYA 4010), Methods of Social Research (SYA 4300), and Social Statistics (SYA 4400). Students complete their remaining 21 credits from SYA, SYD, SYG, SYO, SYP, and select IDS courses. A Sociology minor requires fifteen credit hours. We offer both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree options.
