The Mathematics Department provides undergraduate and graduate programs culminating in Bachelor of Science (BS), Bachelor of Arts (BA), Master of Science (MS), Master of Arts (MA), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. (Refer to the Graduate Bulletin for specifics on master's and doctoral programs.) Exceptional undergraduates, particularly those with prior college credits, may pursue an accelerated combined degree pathway enabling them to complete both bachelor's and master's qualifications in approximately five years. Mathematics serves as either a cornerstone of liberal arts education or as foundational preparation for advanced studies in other disciplines or mathematics itself. Graduates find career opportunities in corporate, financial, or government settings, as well as in secondary or higher education. The Actuarial Science program specifically prepares students for careers in insurance and finance.
The Mathematics Department offers two accredited B.S./M.S. accelerated tracks, permitting students to apply up to 12 credit hours toward both degrees simultaneously. The Pure Mathematics curriculum delivers comprehensive training in fundamental mathematical disciplines (including algebra, real/complex analysis, and geometry/topology) while fostering specialized knowledge in current research areas.
