Computational Science is a growing field that equips professionals with the digital tools to address challenges in natural sciences, social sciences, and engineering, similar to how mathematics supports theoretical solutions. Students completing the Computational Science program will gain qualifications suitable for careers in industrial and governmental research facilities, as well as for advanced academic studies. The expertise developed in this program enhances the capabilities of scientists and engineers, enabling graduates to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams to tackle complex scientific and engineering issues through computational approaches.
The Scientific Computing Department brings together researchers focused on developing, evaluating, implementing, and applying computational methods to challenges across diverse fields including biology, ecology, chemical engineering, chemistry, computer science, geology, geophysics, materials science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics, and astrophysics. Faculty and graduate researchers receive funding from various federal, state, laboratory, and corporate sources. The department's academic and research initiatives are further enriched through collaborations with faculty from other Florida State University departments and affiliated researchers from national laboratories. These partnerships enable the department to deliver cutting-edge degree programs that blend mathematical foundations with practical applications, offering students comprehensive cross-disciplinary education in scientific computing.

The courses listed below represent the minimum required for admission consideration:

4 English courses, at least three with substantial writing requirements

4 mathematics courses at the Algebra I level and higher

3 natural science courses, at least two with laboratory experience

3 social science courses

2 sequential courses of a world language or American Sign Language

2 elective courses, preferably in the above subject areas
